Militair Hospitaal in Ostend Studiebureau Boydens
The project consists of 300 residential units (lofts, apartments and houses) housed in existing buildings and supplemented with new volumes. In order to preserve the characteristic image of the military hospital , new construction is mainly concentrated in the bordering areas. New construction and existing buildings are adjacently placed, so that these distinct entities remain visible.
The design provides a differentiated housing for a varied buyers market.Nevertheless, The City of Ostend particularly requested affordable housing for young families for the purpose of permanent residence rather than secondary/ holiday homes. For that reason, there are over 160 spacious dwellings of which with three bedrooms and a private outdoor space. There are also about 30 lofts and about 100 apartments. The orientation, location, views, typology and internal organization provide each property its own specific character.
Parking for residents is located mainly in two underground car parks, planted at the edges of the field. The site is accessible via two entrances, both through the Godtschalckstraat and through the Fortstraat. Traffic circulation is avoided when possible within the enclave. Through traffic is impossible. The landscape within the perimeter walls comprises many public and private greenery.
The project is realized in two successive phases. Both the developer and the construction team are committed to making the Military Hospital a new, vibrant part to the city of Ostend where the harmony between living, working and leisure take center stage.
The techniques comply according to current standards and in consultation with project developer to realized a perfect integration in the buildings. Different types of ventilation are used, Both type C and D types of ventillation are used in the renovation of the new building. Heating occurs via individual heating systems.
Plumbing and electricity are designed with the aim of dwelling energetically as possible.
