In March 2013, the Flemish government approved the operation of a new interventional cardiology center (cath lab) at General Hospital Turnhout in association with University Hospital Leuven.
The Kempens heart center is located in General Hospital Turnhout on the St Elisabeth campus. Diagnostic catheterizations (where narrowing of the coronary arteries with contrast and scans can be visualized) are performed in this heart center.  In addition, patients may also have invasive procedures to relieve constriction in the coronary artery with the aid of a balloon or a stent.

The ward is located on the fourth floor and features two catheterization rooms, which are equipped with indoor climate, electrical and safety technology as well as an operating quarter. In addition, there is also a spacious room for the care of outpatients and a separate nursing post.
The operating rooms comply with the strictest standards and are equipped with the latest equipment for complex surgery.
