Residential Care Facility Sint Petrus in Turnhout, BE Studiebureau Boydens

The residential care center Sint Petrus with 129 beds is situated near the Sint-Elisabeth Hospital in Turnhout.
In this GEOTABS project, the building mass is activated by concrete core activation (CCA) and the heat demand is mostly covered by ground source heat pumps. Since this is a rather large building, a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System was installed. This technology can only be applied with high permeability soils and rather high capacities. The soil itself acts as energy storage.
It was decided to work with two heat pumps with two different regimes. The low temperature heat pump the CCA that ensures the base climate. The high temperature heat pump feeds the complimentary heaters that see to the adjustment of the temperature per room.
A comfortable summer climate can be achieved in the building by using concrete core activation and aftercooling on the hygiene ventilation. The cooling occurs in a passive manner because the ground temperature is between 9 and 12°C.

Sanitary preheating is realized by means of solar collectors. Each room is equipped with its own sanitary cell, toilet, shower, wash basin and kitchenette. The presence of elements like the kitchenette, domestic lighting and large glass sections, considerably increases the living comfort.
